| I have a pretty awesome schedule this term. I'm completely done with coursework so that helps. Every week I'll need to be on campus: W 8-2 Th 9-7 F 8-2
I've got some bimonthly meetings, but even on the busiest week, it looks like this: M 2:30-4 W 8-5 Th 9-7 F 8-2
Compared to the last couple of terms when I was on campus until 10 pm two to three days a week, and often there from 9 am, this is awesome! I've got lots of "holes" for scheduling meetings with professors, having lunch or coffee with friends, attending workshops, and juggling my writing center hours if necessary. This is also a big improvement on the past couple of terms when I had to come to campus a whole extra day (that means two extra hours driving) if I needed to meet with a professor or make up hours or I wanted to attend a workshop or something.
Today was my first day back on campus. School didn't start yet but I had some stuff I needed to get done. I was there from 8-4:30. And am now realizing a potential problem with my schedule. On those days when I am up at 6 in order to be on campus by 8... there is no way I'll be up to getting any work done when I get home.

| ... so far--in the... let's say 5 1/2 days I've been on it.
-went thrift store shopping
-ate at Udon Sushi Bakery, which is back open after being closed due to fire for six months
-tried 99% chocolate
-watched a bunch of episodes of CSI
-made enchiladas with Kea for our friends Aaron and Katie and watched Spirited Away, which I liked better than I did the first time
-saw The Golden Compass, which I really liked and will probably see again soon
-submitted a conference proposal
-almost finished submitting a request for conference funding
-read three articles so I could start planning my research
-met with a prof to get changes to my research approved
-contacted another prof who I'm asking to supervise my project, plus some other grad students whose work might link up with mine
-read three files from MA applicants
-made an appointment for a haircut
-wrapped and shipped all the presents
-swept about six inches of snow off the car
-made pancakes twice
-made a pasta bake

| we were studying at the bookstore and i got so irritated at this woman next to me. she was with this asian guy. it seemed sort of like a language partner thing. the guy was older; i think his son was in college because they talked about him taking the mcat. and the guy seemed to be in the sciences or something; they were talking about amygdalas and adrenaline. it sounded like he was explaining his research or something. or maybe his son's research? i don't know.
anyway, i see international students (usually from asia--or maybe these are just the ones i notice) with language partners all the time in the library at my school. and the americans are always so frickin condescending and i saw the same thing here.
she was like explaining to the guy what steroids were. now, i know he may have been unfamiliar with the english term, but i'm sure he knows what steroids are. i mean that's common knowledge isn't it? do other countries not have news reports of athletes on steroids?
it was like when i heard this american student telling her language partner about wikipedia, like how it works and how teachers don't like you to cite it. i'm like, seriously, this guy must already know this.
i don't know. am i wrong? maybe wikipedia is not used in korea?
i see the same thing with my coworkers. and we are talking about consulting with international students at our meeting this week. i'm thinking about how to bring up the condescension i see. not in everyone just in a few folks. i'm thinking i should focus on my own faults and how i need to try to watch myself. it seems like everytime i do this people end up focusing on my faults though. maybe i can talk about language partners. i definitely don't want to say i've seen things at my work cuz people will get all defensive. and anyway, i don't know if there's anything to be done anyway. folks know they're not supposed to think they're better, but they do anyway.

well other than that, read this comic today. i loved it. i was like laughing out loud. it was kind of bad. only thing is i thought the end was kind of lame, but maybe keeps it open for a sequel. and at the beginning, i couldn't stand the main character, but he got a little more sympathetic as it went on.
